What I like most about my new found media literacy

1. My favorite thing about my new found media literacy is that I have a greater desire to be informed by the media. I used to never watch news of any kinda. Now I find myself checking different news based websites and sometimes watching it on tv. I definitely dont read everything, but it is nice to know a little more about what is going on in the world, and to understand why it’s important. I also enjoy reading news from different websites because it is interesting to see the different biases.

2. I never realized how interconnected the world has become. I took my facebook account for granted. I never noticed how every tv show has several blogs and how people even respond to news stories. I think its really cool how anyone can share their opinion with everyone. I used to have no idea though that companies were using these to advertise specifically to the individual and more importantly that some sites own your ideas when you put them up. It has really made me realize how careful I need to be when posting anything.

3. Finally I really enjoyed learning how to use flash. I have been using illustrator and photoshop as a fashion major for the last three years, so it was nice to get to explore a new program. It was very annoying at times, like all adobe products can be, but overall I like what I was able to do fairly simply. I never thought that I would ever be able to animate anything, so I enjoyed the project.

Child star Miley Cyrus is being heavily criticized for her phots in Vanity Fair. She posed seemingly covered only by a bed sheet. She has since apologized to her fans and is quoted stating that her and her parents felt the photos would be seen as natural. But seriously shes a 15 year old girl! She’s a child still and who wants to see a child photographed like that. This photo shoot was a bad call by everyone involved. And just proves that young girls are trying to be “sexy” way too soon.

Starbucks is having to cut back dramaticly on the number of stares they will be opening in the US in the next year and focus on growth abroad, due to weak US sales. This makes complete sense to me for two reasons. First there is already a starbucks on practically every corner so it must be starting to cost more to have so many stores open and only a set amount of people purchasing coffee at them. Second starbucks is a slightly expensive cup of coffee, and with places suck as Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds jumping aboard the gourmet coffee train for a lower price, it makes me believe that starbucks mush be losing customers.

Rock of Love Blog

I was watching the season finale of VH1’s Rock of Love, a tv dating show, when in the middle of it there was a commercial sating that you could go online to VH1’s Rock of Love blog and post about which girl you thought would be chosen as the winner. I think this really shows how corporations are really getting that the internet is such a strong force in connecting people and that people wan to use it. I went to the site and so many people were commenting on the show and each little event as it happend. This is so smart of Viacom because not only are they macking serious money of the advertisers on this site but it gives them the exact idea about what kinda of women, dates, and drama people want to see on this show and shows like this for free.
