What I like most about my new found media literacy
1. My favorite thing about my new found media literacy is that I have a greater desire to be informed by the media. I used to never watch news of any kinda. Now I find myself checking different news based websites and sometimes watching it on tv. I definitely dont read everything, but it is nice to know a little more about what is going on in the world, and to understand why it’s important....

Worst of all worlds for Miley Cyrus →
Child star Miley Cyrus is being heavily criticized for her phots in Vanity Fair. She posed seemingly covered only by a bed sheet. She has since apologized to her fans and is quoted stating that her and her parents felt the photos would be seen as natural. But seriously shes a 15 year old girl! She’s a child still and who wants to see a child photographed like that. This photo shoot was a bad...
Starbucks to slash U.S. store openings →
Starbucks is having to cut back dramaticly on the number of stares they will be opening in the US in the next year and focus on growth abroad, due to weak US sales. This makes complete sense to me for two reasons. First there is already a starbucks on practically every corner so it must be starting to cost more to have so many stores open and only a set amount of people purchasing coffee at them....

Rock of Love Blog
I was watching the season finale of VH1’s Rock of Love, a tv dating show, when in the middle of it there was a commercial sating that you could go online to VH1’s Rock of Love blog and post about which girl you thought would be chosen as the winner. I think this really shows how corporations are really getting that the internet is such a strong force in connecting people and that...
How to Get Ahead in Advertising
According to the book glamour is an ideal it is the absolute goal use in advertising. It is less about the product and more about the lifestyle or thoughts that go along with it. It produces envy of a lifestyle which produces a need. The movie cultivates this idea of glamour in several ways. It starts out with Bagley describing how to sell everyday fattening food to the mother on a diet. He gives...

France Pursues Yacht Seized by Pirates →
I had no idea that there were still pirates! Thinking back on this, I don’t know why this article shocked me so much, I mean there will always be people who steal things and hold people hostage for their gain but I guess it just seems weird to me that they call them pirates. It was really interesting to read about what france and other countries are tying to do to catch these pirates, as...

Teenage pregnancy just isn't scary enough anymore →
I was skimming the chicago tribune’s website and I found this article. It talks about the rise of teen pregnancy and how teens dont really see the consequences of it anymore. They also don’t think it will ever happen to them. Also most teens dont put their babies up for adoption and this often leads to poverty. This article states the facts but it also mentions the movie Juno. The...
High School Confidential
There are several commercials on tv for high school confidential a new show on WE tv. I tried to find the ad on youtube but couldn’t. In the ad there are 12 girls that are supposed to show the life of real college students. They start out the ad but saying “never once have i broke out in song…never once have I danced through these halls” They continue saying how their lives...

TV Hero
While I was watching tv this week I realized that Dr. Drew, of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew is a tv hero. He does a lot for these b list celebrities on the show. He really cares about them getting better. Its kinda funny because you will see one of the people on the show having a problem at 2 am and Dr. Drew will come to the center, clearly looking like he just got woken up at the middle of the...
Video: The Century of Self
I thought this video was very interesting. A lot of it was stuff that I had heard before, like the psychology of the masses and some of the history of public relations, but I never knew who was behind it all. I found it very interesting that as an advertising minor all of my classes have taught me to appeal to one’s inner desires when trying to sell a product. That you must trry to make the...
" everybody's making love cause love is free"
Oh everybody Devil take your money Money’s got no hold on me Oh oh everybody’s making love cause love is free -sheryl crow This is some of the lyrics to her new song. My housemate loves it so I hear it all the time. Today was the first time that I actually listened to the lyrics. I can tell why my roommate lovesthis song..shes such a hippie. But Sheryl really has a great message....
Shaking Babies
I was driving down Washington street the other day and this billboard randomly stuck out to me. I said “babies are fragile. Don’t shake babies.” When I first saw it I thought it was ridiculous common sense and why would someone take the time to put that on a billboard. I even told a couple of my friends about it and they all thought it was very random. I decided to google it to...

The View- Democratic ticket
I was watching the view this morning and in they were discussing how the National Organization of Women was really mad that Ted Kennedy backed Obama instead of Hillary Clinton. This really bothered my because similarly to what the women on the view were saying. I feel like it is becoming a race vs. gender issue instead of which candidate is really best for the job. Its great that the nation is...
