Video: The Century of Self
I thought this video was very interesting. A lot of it was stuff that I had heard before, like the psychology of the masses and some of the history of public relations, but I never knew who was behind it all. I found it very interesting that as an advertising minor all of my classes have taught me to appeal to one’s inner desires when trying to sell a product. That you must trry to make the person feel like they need your product and not just list out reasons why it would be a good idea for them to buy it, but we never got the history. The same is true of my fashion major. We learn in product developement class to sell clothes as a means to express ones inner self, but we never learned that this is a semi recent idea and who was the man behind it. I found it interest ind that Bernays had such understanding of the mind out crowds and how much of his ideas are still the main method of selling products today.
